Aquarium safe items for Axolotls?

Just got an axolotl yesterday at the expo, she is in her tank but there was nothing in it. I wasn't planning on getting one, and I was going to buy fish and just get everything on Monday. I'll still be getting my supplies tomorrow, but for now she is in the 14 gallon aquarium I have, with water. That's it.

Does anybody know what kind of sand and plants are safe to put in an axolotl's tank? I know I can't use gravel, and I don't know where to get/don't really want to use pieces of slate.

Plants are another big thing, since I want to have live plants. Are there any certain plants I should avoid?
