veiled cham death...had to remove eggs...

my veiled chameleon was gravid and she looked like she was about to lay eggs within a week or so (according to her actions)
and she kept hanging on the screen top of her cage, but she was so heavy with eggs that her back legs would fall and she'd be stuck hanging by her front legs, so i kept rescuing her and eventually (because of laying in the heat all day with no water)
she got way too dehydrated and was really weak on the bottom of the cage....so for the last day or so i was taking special care of her and giving lots of water and she looked like she was doing better but today she died.....and she had the eggs in her....so we decided that we would try and save the 40 or so eggs that were in her.....i figured they'd be about ready because it looked like she'd lay soon......so we removed the eggs and they were in two bundles....20 eggs in each (more or less) but we couldnt separate the eggs....so they are in my incubator right now but they dont look good...they are all yellow and one broke....and it was only filled with yellow...nothing else...so i figure the eggs must be bad...but i'll leave them in there just in case.
just thought i'd share that and if anyone has something to say or n e ideas of what to do go ahead and reply to this

she had 61 eggs in her, and 25 of them have turned white and semi-hard...does that mean that they might be ok?....the other 36 are yellow and mooshy....

Candle the eggs, if they you can see vein growth, or they are "pinkish", then they are viable. If they are yellow (only when you candle them - some eggs may retain a yellow colour on the outside, but be good inside). Though I havent had any experience with cham eggs, it does sound like some of them are good. I would candle them all to make sure. Good luck! :thumbsup:

Sorry to hear about your girl.
But, don't give up on the eggs yet! It can take up to three months (depending on the incubating temp) before you'll see any veining with candling. Keep them unless they mold and collapse.

thatnks guys....no more of the eggs have turned hard and white...just the original 25..but i'm keeping them all until they go moldy and collapse and stuff...i hope some of them live...if they do they will be for sale too...we'll call them the miracle babies..lol

sorry to hear about this.

in your post you didn't mention any thing about putting her in a a spot where she can lay her eggs. Did you. well they need 2 feet of sand for them to lay there eggs in. from the sounds of it she died because you did not give her an area deep enought for her to lay her eggs in. correst me if you did or did not.

i had a tub that was deep enough for her to lay them in and i'm positive she was aware it was there...my guess is that she wsa so drained from hanging helplessly from the top of her cage with no water, plus the fact that she had 61 eggs in her...i guess she was so drained it just got the best of her!.....well...the 25 eggs are still looking good though...the other 36 are still yellow and really soft, but i'll keep em.
