monkey tailed skink
Would anyone know what one of these would be going for now? They can longer be imported so I would say somewhere around $500 plus.Could someone give me a better estimate.

never even heard of them. i would assume endangered. especially if they are THAT expensive. geez. i hope if you find one that you are intending to help the population a little... i would think only breeders would want them, and that is so that they don't entirely die off...

If you see one for $500... And you're SERIOUSLY interested in breeding them, snatch 'em up. That's a steal at that price. Prehensile Tailed Skinks retail for anywhere from $550 *not the greatest of shape usually* to easily a grand. They're not THAT expensive, considering that Green Tree Pythons and Emerald Tree Boas go for normally higher than that... And those are not endangered.
The Solomon Island Prehensile (monkey) Tailed Skink is protected under CITES regulation, and are no longer exported from their point of origin. The only specimens around now will be long-term captives, captive bred and possibly*sigh* illegally smuggled skinks. With no more being exported, one can only expect prices to rise, considering they only have one baby per nine months.

That was last year, and until this year, that cute little exportation law didn't exist.

Yea last year I at the pet store i used to work at we sold our monkey tailed skink for 100 bucks cuase it wasnt moving.

Yea, but if you're totally out in the dark as to proper care and maintenance of these spectacular animals, DO NOT attempt to breed them... Leave it up to someone who has some working knowledge and/or experience.

Oh yea I do have knowledge about them and like i said I do have experience with the one from the store.Me and my friend have a real nice encolsure for it.I have also done some reading and know a couple people i can talk to about them.

Good to hear, man. They are probably one of the most interesting species of skinks out there *just my opinion*... It's a shame that so many of them don't even get a second look in stores... Most people I speak with think of them as ugly and "pointless". I see them as a fascinating, highly underrated reptile.
Oh, Aaron, just so you know, I wasn't directing that "don't breed them if you're totally out in the dark" comment at you, there was a prior post indicating you SHOULD try and breed them to save their population by someone who misread my post before. I was in no way saying that you weren't capable of caring for them correctly. I must commend you for your decision to work with this species. Good luck, as well.

i think i saw a adult one today at a place in victoria called crystal gardens. i was just taking a guess that it was a monkey tailed skink though...it looked like a blue tounge skinks face/body, but with a long tail and browner. ive never seen a monkey tailed skink before though so it could have been something else.

Crystal Gardens has a pair. They are really neat feeling, and so much fun to play with, wish i could have some Just curious, when someone breeds them, at what point do they seperate the baby from the parents? When you do seperate them, does it have an effect on either one of the parents?

HEY THOSE WERE MINE!!! We sent them out to Crystal Gardens a while back and we just heard that they had a pair of babies again! Wish we still had them but its good to know that they are in a good home.

We have a trio of prehensile tailed skinks (as we refer to them). They are not always the easiest of skinks to care for. I do know of a few other people in Canada that have good success with them.
The reptile refuge in Vernon, B.C. has six of them I believe.
If anyone runs into problems with them I can give you the e-mail of a lady in New York that runs a world wide Prehensile Tailed Skink Society and she is brilliant and extremely helpful.
We need to take good care of these skinks and get them breeding. If you get the chance and can afford it you should buy them up.
