Re: "Animal Hoarding"
"hoarders" tend to keep the animals under improper conditions and the animals are almost always sick.
We are simply collectors with an amazing hobby

Re: "Animal Hoarding"
I consider myself a collector. All my animals are well kept, well fed, and not sick. Having a lot of animals does not a hoarder make. However I could see how some would look at a huge reptile collection and think we are hoarding them away. Especially someone who doesn't understand keeping snakes in plastic tubs like some do.

I don't think it was Confessions of an Animal Hoarder that he was on. I remember him being on Obsessed or Hoarders...either on TLC or A&E. But the amount is true. Saw the episode. Basically the rats had chewed homes into most of the walls and such. Had a lot of sick rats as well. Not many dead...but that is because I think the other rats attacked/ate the dead and dying because he couldn't possibly feed 1500 rats correctly.

You do have a snake problem, and the only cure is more snakes.

Re: "Animal Hoarding"
Hey guys,
I'm a researcher for the show Confessions: Animal Hoarding.
In regards to your question what makes someone a hoarder, TUFTS Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium, which is the main authority on this issue defines an animal hoarder as such:
The pathological accumulation of animals was first described in [1981] and animal hoarding was formally defined in the public health literature in [1999] using the following criteria:
- Having more than the typical number of companion animals
- Failing to provide even minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, shelter, and veterinary care, with this neglect often resulting in illness and death from starvation, spread of infectious disease, and untreated injury or medical condition
- Denial of the inability to provide this minimum care and the impact of that failure on the animals, the household, and human occupants of the dwelling
- Persistence, despite this failure, in accumulating and controlling animals
So if you've ever felt overwhelmed by the amount of animals in your care be they snakes, reptiles, ferrets, bunnies, rats, cats or dogs, you might want to contact Animal Hoarding Project | Home there's some good info there about hoarding and if you want you can talk to the casting people from the show by calling 1-877-698-7387.
All the best to you and your pets!
-Sara
