I want more Monitors!!!
Just watching programme on NAtional Geographic "Wild" called Liazard Kings. All about different monitors and how they are as intelligent or more intelligent than a lot of mammals.
REally amazing programme and animals but all i keep thinking is "i would love to keep one of those"!!!

Re: I want more Monitors!!!
Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting.~ I've always had a fascination with monitors, but we've got a big enough animal 'bill' each month, I wouldn't consider getting myself one until I move out. :c
I just love their resemblance to the Komodo Dragon, I've always loved them, but they're, of course, too dangerous to consider housing.. At least, for me. I know some people are just determined enough to say,"Screw the risks!"
I had no idea about the intelligence thing with monitors. Now I'm intrigued to do some studying.~

Re: I want more Monitors!!!
i have a nile monitor they take a lot of handling to calm down.
mine is getting there.
very nice animals.
but they do mostly get to a big size. mine will have a room to himself later on.
great reps easy to feed though as they eat mice and rats when they are old enough.

I remember watching Fatal Attractions on AP one night and it featured this person with 2 niles.. I can't remember the details but something happened to him in the house, I think, and the Niles ended up chompin' on him 'cause they were hungry. That's probably just a freak accident, right?

Yeaaah.. I think he like.. passed out or died or something in the house while they were free roaming and they ate him. If he wasn't dead, then they killed him.

I hear you Rob. I am at the point now where if I want something new, I'd have to trade something off, and I am not yet willing to do that. I spend hours per week looking at snakes and reptiles on line thinking, ohh I'd like to have one of those, or ooh those are so cool. But in order to be a responsible keeper, I have to keep my collection manageable. But.....someday!

Oh yeaaah, that's right. Thanks for clearing that up.~
So not a freak accident, more of an irresponsible owner.

Re: I want more Monitors!!!
Any bite from any animal to any responsible owner would be cleaned immediately and thoroughly, the guy was obviuosly a tool if it got bad enough to kill him.

We are holding out for that lottery win!!! Then nice room full of various size of boaphile cages, rigged with automated water supply and misters as required to minimise the time neededfor daily maintenance therfore meaning my back will allow me to look after more animals responsibly!!
No harm in a little daydream.............

Ha! I hear ya on that one! If we won the lottery, I could move out into a nice, at least, two story house and use the extra rooms to house more geckos, snakes, etc. I think I'm done with cats, ferrets are still pretty awesome but... eh, I relate better with reptiles, personally. No clue why. May still want another dog 10 or 20 years down the line, though. I've always been interested in Coatimundis, though...
So, if I won the lottery, then, I'd move out, buy a two story house, and use the extra rooms to house reptiles I've been interested in but could never afford/have the room for, and I'd also build a giant, caged backyard playground to house a Coatimundi or two!
Daydreams are nice~ I'm not too sure about getting more snakes, though. My boyfriend thinks he has a mild phobia of them, but he respects that it's one thing I'm into and I can add to my 'collection' if I wanted, but yanno.. I want to be respectful of him, too, and I want it to be something we can both enjoy, together. He's more of a gecko/lizard person, I'm a.. everything but turtles person!(Turtles are cool but they just don't appeal too much to -me-.) I'm hoping after we move in together and he spends regular time with Xybe, that snakes aren't all that bad and maybe he'll start to lose this 'phobia'.

Ahhhh. That makes me think of the 'snake girl' who thought she'd built up an immunity to snake venom. Secretly kept all sorts of snakes, thought they all loved her like a dog or a cat would. Over time she thought she'd developed an immunity to her snakes' venom, seeing as how she got bit by one and it had no effect(it just didn't give a good enough 'punch'). Then she acquired a Gaboon. Whenever she cleaned her snakes' cages, she'd just let them free roam her home. Well, the Gaboon had hid under a seat/couch, and she went to get it from under the piece of furniture and it bit her. Not sure if she didn't worry about it until she started losing blood from her nose, mouth, etc. and vomitting blood, or if all of that immediately happened, but she died in her room on the floor with a note in her hands, with a specific hospital or phone number scribbled on it in case someone found her in time. I think the police, or whoever investigated, said it looked like someone just took a base ball bat and brutally beat someone on account of blood being all down the halls and just everywhere. Really sad she had to go that way. Sadder that she could have prevented it.
