boa enclosure
Hi, i have a 22 inch dominant male columbian redtail boa (BCI). I have him in a 10 gallon enclosure right now. the guy at the pet store says he was the baby of a 13 foot female and 10 foot male. He said that he will be anywere from 7 feet - 12 feet in size. Does anyone know how much it will cost to make a 15ftX4ftX5ft cage???
Heres a pic this is not my snake but looks alot like him.

The snake looks awesome! Congrats on your grab.
As for the cage, based on my research (i'm currently building one for myself) a 6x2x2 that I'm making is going to be around 260 with everything included (glass, track, lock, wood). I'd think that a cage the size you're talking about will be closer to 650, as it's over double what I'm doing. The melamine isn't too bad in price, at least at Home Depot, but you're going to need several pieces, and then the doors (if you're going with sliding glass) are going to be pricy for something that size. My suggestion would be finalizing the size and design, and then going and costing the entire thing, which is what I did. I didn't think a colombian bci, even a red tail, would need something that size...figured it was only the giant pythons that would require something of those dimensions...but I could be wrong Either way, good luck, and I hope this helps a bit.

In my opinion, you really don't need to build something that big. If your boa is a male, it will probably only reach a length of between 6-8 feet. An enclosure that is 6 x 2 x 2 would be plenty big enough. If you wanted to add some extra space make it 2.5 feet deep. The size you are talking about would be plenty big enough to house a 15-18 foot burmese python that will wiegh considerably more than your male boa will.
As far as cost goes, I'm really not sure. I had 2 - 4x2x2 emclosures built and they cost me $450 for both.
Nice looking snake, and good luck with the construction.

13 foot female and a 10 foot male.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.
You have no idea how many times we've heard that in the reptile community. I remember a time when someone here posted an ad for an 11 foot male boa that wasn't even as big as the person holding it. Don't believe what you hear from pet stores, especially with far fetched stories like that. Boas VERY rarely exceed 8 feet, even for females.
Anyway, the cage dimensions you spelled out there are bigger than you would need for a RETIC, much less a male boa. A 6x2x2 cage is all you will ever need, and if you build it yourself, could cost anywhere from $60 to $200, depending on the materials you select.

well i agree with most of what was said.. but if you dont want a ball, dont get one..
second your telling a 29 year old person that has an extreem amount of knowledge what size enclosure he needs.. may i add as far as ive read he doesnt believe in "minimum dimensions"
third rectic in capticity DOES NOT NEED a 20x5 enclosure.. and your boa definatly doesnt need 15x4 cage espically with 5 feet of hight.... thats just rediculas...its nice your trying to give him more than enough room.. but it just makes things more dificult.. do a nice 6x2.5x2 enclosre and youll be fine
but most of all.. listen to the ppl on here man... they know what there talkin about.

8x3x3 is fine just remember that more room means more cleaning.. and 3 feet youlll have a hard time gettin in doors.. lol.. id say either 7x2x2 or 6.5x3x2.. but once again 6x2.5 or 3 would be more than enough...
as for large snakes you may want top wait till your boa reaches full size and you get a little larger yourself.. a snake that size can do serious damage and will weigh more than you.. at your age ( and my estimate of size) you may be mentally able to handle such a large snake but not phycially.. im nearing 20, im 5'10" and 165 pounds and feel that im not large enough to handle such a creature.. so i had to turn down taking in a 13 foot female burm..
i know nothing about large snakes but my guess would be a burm.. arent they a little smaller than the others listed??? maybe easier to handle.. or even just another boa.. there not a small snake either..

well i was saying when i can support food and needs by my self (when i am 25 years old) and i was thinking a anaconda because all over the internet they have people that had a green anaconda since it was a babie and that they are just the sweetest thing(except at feeding time of coarse) lol. and i heard that they only need a 25 by 4 by 3 foot cage if you want to have one of those special pond tpe water areas or just a 20 by 4 by 3 foot cage. thats why i said that a retic would need a cage that big.
i wish i had money like the zoo so i can really have large and joyful enclosures fr large snakes. ( mabe iw ill start one beggining with a flea circus then a boa zoo then a large snake zoo then a zoo, and i will be filthy rich.Lol :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom: :atom:
