No actually she was not an adoption but her mother was dropped off with us and she ended up laying 40 some odd eggs, and they actually hatched out (not all survivors) and we had to keep one of the little babies of course and now four years later (b-day is on Feb 4) she's part of the family, same age as our youngest son by one month exactly. We'll post more pics in the summer as she is absolutely gorgeous'er during that time. Thanks for the nice words!!!!Allison

lol hey kevin you never told me you had an iggy!, awsome pics, I really like your to ydnic, adoptings always the best way to bring a new igauna in my opinion I was just curious I'm thinking about adopting one this summer as I have a huge closet 6 feet by 6 feet by 4 feet I'm just sorta scared about temperment, I understand the trauma for them must be horrible just do they ever sort of recover from it? I don't care if he/she dosen't want to be handled I'm just more worried about when it comes to cleaning and feeding you know.
Any thoughts or experince dealing with that sorat situation?
Cheers
Kayla

heheh - yeah tempermental is right!

Everything I do with Lucy is very one step at a time. They don`t charge you whne you come into a room - at least Lucy doesn`t but she can be quite spastic at times. She is a wake all day so she naturally sleeps all night. Feeding is no problem drop the dish of salad on the floor and voila! Anytime I have to pick her up I just wait until she is alseep and I gently wake her and then she is very easy to pick up because she isn`t as alert. However, this doesn`t mean that I won`t be scratched. to be quite honest my wrists are usually scratched up. One good trick is to cut finger holes in a pair of thick socks, and pull them up your arms to your elbows and then you are pretty safe. I think iguanas may prefer that better because then they have something to grip while you hold them. I don`t use this method just because I don`t want to encourge her to grip onto my arms every time she is handled.

Handling them isn`t so important, but it should be done at least once a week just so your ig stays comfortable with you. Also I have read that you should never give into their tantrums because it will create a learned behavior. ie) I spazz she lets me go, there for i should spazz everytime she holds me because then she won`t want to bother me. This isn`t good because it can result in a very aggressive pet.

Now, considdering it will be an adopted ig, chances are it will be very aggresive. More often than not - adoptive igs are abused igs. As with any abused animal trust is an issue. As with any trust issue major patience is required.

Lucy was pure evil when I got her. After a year of hard work she is nearly acceptible for an iguana. Sure she has her bad moments but so do I....Lucy now loves to be caressed and stroked hard on her back like a cat. She loves apples and manderine oranges for treats and scratches at the bottem of the door when she needs some lovin'....

They honestly can become a great pet, but you must invest the time to see true results...

Thanks for sharing your story ydnic I will still have to do some more thinking but I'd really enjoy the chance to give an iggy a new start even if it means so bumps and gashes along the way lol.
