Boyfriend's gross new pet :(

HAHA!

My boyfriend got a Texas Tiger Centipede (Scolopendra polymorpha) from Arachnophiliacs at the Newmarket Reptile Expo today. Here are some pics...*shudder*

When this guy gets spooked and starts running all over, I just feel like I want to be sick. LOL! But so far, a very neat addition. Anyone else keep these? My boyfriend named him Nasty Nate. HAHA!

I think it was like 30 bucks or close to it.

I am not sure if thats a good price or bad price, but its cheap enough either way that I didn't care to bargain hunt. LOL :P

EEEEEK!!!

Although I LOVE tarantulas and like scorps, any type of pede especially, centipedes really creep me out!

I still like looking at them, but the fear factor ranks up high with me and I would never be able to care for one.

I think you're lucky to get to have one around without having to care for it! Best deal I've heard of! lol

He was munching on a roach the entire trip home...travel didn't seem to phase him.

We will most likely be feeding crickets and other assorted insects.

Eep, I don't think I'd want one. Although I do like Black Millipede's, those centipedes creep me out.

Aidan, as much as they freak me out I still force myself to look at them....I'm drawn to their appearance as much as I am repulsed...not enough to buy one though! If you get one at the Toronto expo bring it by my table and watch every hair on my arm stand on end!lol

I just got a Vietnamese Centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes) and holy crap is that thing evil! When I watch it the things that come to mind are devil spawn, epitomy of evil, predator, nightmares. I am terrified of creepy crawly things that look like they are from another planet and move faster than the eye can see. Why do I have it then? Well, I am attempting to get over my fear and learn about a species I don't have experience with yet. Wish me luck! LOL :P

The nice part is you really don't have to clean their enclosures ever, aside from removing leftovers and such anyways....so that means any "handling" is a minimum if ever at all.

So far this guy has been hiding most of the time. We hope he will come out more often as he gets a bit older maybe?

I use a very long pair of tongs/forceps to do anything in the enclosure. From the research I have done the bite from this particular centipede is medically significant. All centipedes have toxic bites, and somehow I ended up with the nastiest of them. LOL. Besides, this creature is so fast and is such a contortionist there is no way I could get my hand out of it's way fast enough to avoid a bite. Part of me is terrified of this thing, but another part of me is intrigued.

Marisa - the only time I really see mine out is when I drop in food items

LOL funny enough a house centipede will scare me more than any known critter is capable of, but the big exotic ones are totally awesome. I have no problems with them at all.
