Guess what guys? Yesterday i was in ashdown arkansas fishing at my grandfathers pond, on the way back to the house i saw a turtle crossing the old dirt trail, i knew he was aquatic because there was alage on his shell, HIS front claws were over 2 inches long. So i know he is a male aquatic turtle, i took him home with me ( please dont be mad, i coudlnt resist). After doing some research i found him to be a cooter! He is 10 inches long. Hes so precious. Does anyone have any information on keeping them? I plan on having him in a 50 gallon pond. Sound ok?

I really don't think it was very wise of you to take this turtle home with you especially since you didnt know what kind it was and not to mention, have no idea how to care for it.. You asked people to not 'be mad' at you, but im not sure how you could expect everyone to let it slide and not give you flack over you doing something like this.. I suggest taking this turtle back to where you found it and letting it go.. You cannot possibly meet the requirements it will need on the tiny bit of knowledge you have of the species (you only know what kind of turtle it is).

By the way, Nice signature.. How many names do you have on sSNAKESs now???

I know alot of information on turtles, and i have done my re-search on him, hes doing great...

You JUST caught him. It's a fact you cannot say "he is doing great"

If you know so much information then why do you need to know if a 50 gallon is big enough? Frankly for a ten inch turtle, its not big enough at all. Try 100 gallon MINIMUM for a turtle that has lived in the wild its entire life. That's a simple fact. Sorry to say.

I would release him IMHO.

So your reseach allowed you to find out that it is a 'cooter' and not what size enclosure it would need or any other basic information?? You said you did research, yet your asking people here to help you with how to care for it?? Let it go dude.. It will have a better chance of survival..

What you did was incredibly stupid and selfish. You envidently care nothing about that turtle, you just want a little trophy you can display saying "Hey, I have a cooter!". You have done no research, added to which, you have no idea what parasites that thing is bringing into your house. So instead of thinking about what YOU want for your collection, maybe you should think about that animal's needs and let it go.

Take some pics of him and put them on the wall. Think its best for the little bugger if you released it. Its like, you livin your live in the great outdoors and then get thrown into jail (which is to small, if i have to believe Marisa) and the food will probably suck too

Anways, just think its best to let it go

You have no idea! I have done my research, hes being treated for parasites. Hes not a prize as you say, and how in the hell would you know any of that? I care alot about the animals, you dont tell me how i feel, you know nothing about me! your the type of member im talking about.

Is a 50 gallon big enough for a ten inch cooter who has probably been alive for at least 5 years in the wild to attain that size....I answered. No. It is not.

You are the odd person here. Not us. We do not go out and catch adult turtles from wild populations. I am sorry you are upset, but its not your feelings we care about. Its the turtle. And frankly the best advice anyone can give you on this forum in regards to morals, whats right and whats best for the animal, is to let it go.

why do you not just contact some local breeders and get one born in captivity instead of stealing one from the wild.

Agreed, you should let it go. The only aquatic turtle that you could keep in a 50 gallon is probably a turtle with no more than a 5 or 6 inch carapace length, (that would be a minimum). For a cooter you would probably need at least a 100 - 150 gallon. Seeing as your in the states, you can purchase a turtle for very little money down there. There isn't any need to take one from the wild. This is a forum, you asked everyones opinion and you didn't hear what you wanted. No ones saying anything to be personal. It's all about the critters. Just let him go, he'll be much happier.
