Burmese Python Yawning??
Hi all, I was just wondering about something: After a meal or at random times in the day my Burmese python will "yawn." I'm sure she's not actually yawning but I got curious and wanted to know why she does it. She doesn't do it regularly, Ive only seen her do it twice apart from when she just finished a meal. Why does she do this?
Thanks!

She's realigning her jaws. All snakes do this.

Re: Burmese Python Yawning??
Probably what the previous posters said...but, how about stretching the muscles in the jaw in readiness for the next meal? FEED ME!!!

Yeah, they do that normally. Its kind of like me popping my shoulder back in place after a freerunning course. (wait, what?)

They will open their mouth if too hot sometimes. If it's short around a meal that's probably not the reason but if you have a snake contained in something or with a small temperature gradient and it is opening it's mouth you want to check the temp just in case.

Re: Burmese Python Yawning??
Never heard of anything other than birds doing this (and any animal that can pant offcourse) I have heard of snakes with a bad cold having their mouthed open though. Fascinating

Re: Burmese Python Yawning??
They will also yawn to smell their environment. They have sensors inside their mouths to help them sensor smells around them.
Here's a pretty good article about all the reasons they yawn:

But if anyone asks, I only have 1. The rest just showed up for the house party.
