flex watt heating question
Just got a question about flex watt. I am putting together plans on making a large lifetime enclosure for my boa. I am planning on something around 6-8 feet long probably about 2 feet wide and 2-3 high. I am going to make a filtered water basin and it will have a large hollow log also. My question is if I use flexwatt to help heat the bottom of the enclosure how thick and what material will it heat through? For example if I make it out of wood how thick can it be in order for say a 2 foot or 3 foot strip of 11" heat tape to heat the floor? If you need a better idea of what my enclosure plan is, take a look at a JWORLDS enclosure and then just make it not so tall. Any feed back would be great. Also I am hoping to use a heat panel, would the combination of these two be sufficient? What is the recommended way to heat a large enclosure?

I've heard the best heating with wood is the Kane heat mat. Kane Heat Mats for Less at Big Apple Herp
18x18 would work well.
About flexwatt, I don't know very much.

I would pass on the flexwatt all together for a viv like the one you want to make. Flexwatt just isn't made to heat something like that. I would look into a radiant heat panel. You will get much better ambient heat as well as a hot spot.

I am sorry please let me clarify. I don't want to use it to heat the enclosure. Just to have a slightly warmer ground temperature in a particular spot.

agreed, while flexwatt works good for smaller enclosures, the bigger ones liek what you are talking about, a RHP would work alot better!!

That's okay. I plan on the RHP and I am probably going to put UVA/UVB bulbs as well. I plan on having live moss and possibly small ferns or something of the such. Don't worry I know she will crush them. I plan on putting that stuff in in traveled areas.
