Planning on building a terrarium for my first snake! Suggestions for the experienced?

I have a two year old ball python, male, a little over 2 feet.

My father and I are planning on building a terrarium for him, something to suit him better than the overpriced ones at petco.
We are just in the beginning stages of collecting information on all the things that will have to be added.

Any suggestions on must have additions and the best way to go about starting?
First time, and we want it to be perfect for him.

snake_man, it's a rescue that has super mites. it's no wonder he's small. with the right care, he should fill in.

Keep it simple.. If you want it to look like a piece of furniture then use a nice grade plywood. build a box, cut out a few small holes for ventilation, seal it all with a poly, add a door and a heat panel and your done. It can be as simple or as decorative as you like.

Here is one of mine... this is for my Male Royal.

Here is one I have started, This one is for my Male Boa. We made a few changes as far as doing 2 doors instead of 1 and moved vents around.

ah i should have mentioned he's a rescue! The previous owners began only feeding him once every 3 weeks.
He also wouldn't eat when I first got him. but he's been eating very well lately!

I just realized this, it looks like in the pic that you have heat mats under the substrate. If you use radiant heat panels, shouldn't they be mounted on the top and not underneath the substrate?

I did use flexwatt at one point in time but neither of those pics are the viv with flexwatt. What makes you think I have heat mats under the substraight?

If you are referring to the wire going in the vent that is a temp prob to monitor my snakes hide temp.

Ok. That's what I was wondering. Thanks.
