Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
I have been trying to find out what type of snake I want to get next and I was starting to lean toward another corn snake. Then I thought how about we bump it up and try a ball python. Then I started to wonder and wonder, I think I ahve been on this forum and have learned enough about snakes to bump it up more than that. Now I am thinking a Green Tree Python. They look awesome and don't get to big (not entirely sure on there size so if someone could tell me how long a male Green Tree Python is that would be good) You guys have known me all throughout my time here and you know how I take care of my animals. Do you think I am ready to move from a corn snake all the way to a Green Tree Python. I really like challenges and I want to take this one. Just wanted to know what your peoples thoughts were?

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
At most a male green tree could get 5 or 6 feet

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
If it's what you want then you'll take better care of it then if it's just a "stepping stone" animal.
Green trees are kind of expensive and I'd recommend a seriously well started one to a first timer. Probably 6+ months old as then it's well established and search out good breeders. I don't really know of any in Canada. I'm sure there's some.
Lastly, I'd just fully take the time to consider that it can die fairly quickly and you're hard earned money went down the drain.
For a teen, I'd consider something with less care requirements purely based on I was a teen and know how life CAN go, not necessarily the way it WILL go.

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
Here's my thinking... you only got your corn snake, five weeks ago I think? So you might want to wait a little longer before getting another snake. GTPs are beautiful- no doubt about it. But in general, GTPs aren't good for handling. They are more the type of snake you enjoy from a distance... what we call "display snakes"... that you take care of, but don't really handle. Another corn snake or a ball python would be great if you want to be able to take out and hold your snake; or even a king snake... California king snakes are beautiful and come in so many patterns. It also depends on your budget; depending on how much you can spend, a GTP might not be the best option. If I remember correctly, you owe your parents some $$ from Houdini's enclosure. Another snake will need another enclosure, another heat source, more hides, and another thermostat. A GTP will need a tall enclosure for perching. Corns, kings, and balls will be fine in an enclosure similar to Houdini's. It's tempting, since GTPs are really beautiful, but there's a lot to consider

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
That is my one problem, money. I am willing to spend the money but if it does end up dieing that is alot of money. If you have any other suggestions of more difficult snakes that are not as much money than that would be great. I am totally willing to ssave up for another snake and that is why I am trying to figure out how much money and stuff I will need. I still won't be getting it for a while but I like to think ahead.

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
I won't make any suggestions. I always found just browsing forums and seeing pictures of cool snakes I'd find something that caught my eye to research and see if it was for me.
I was also lucky and worked in pet stores so I got my hands on lots to see what I liked.

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
My budget is probably about 200$ max for just the snake. For size limit my parents would like it to stay from 3-5 foot range. (mabye 6 feet)

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
besides, have you seen the FANGS on GTP's??????
Yikes, that changed my mind to Emerald Tree Boa's REALLY QUICKLY!!
My suggestion is to stay with Cornsnakes (or other colubrid) or BP's for now.

You think Emmy's DON'T have similar teeth? Have you SEEN the size of an Emmy's head or hell their overall weight compared to a gtp? You'll have more damage from the emmy by pure power and weight behind their bite and the same size teeth as the gtp.

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
Do you know anything about motorcycles? A corn is a 250 a carpet or boa is a 650 r a gtp is getting into r1 territory as far as care and experience is concerned. Undetstand?

Re: Decision's, Decision's, Decision's
Aaron
I have only seen pictures of both, and the fangs on the GTP looks far more evil than those on the Emerald!!
But having never seen either in person, I can't say for sure, all I know, is when I saw the fangs on the GTP, I thought to myself, "well I sure don't want THAT to miss at feeding time!!"
Keep in mind that although I have tackled Emu's for vaccinations and tagging, have had my hand ripped open by an injured dog, my arm rent to pieces by an injured and peed off cat, and a Macaw who decided he DID not want me to trim his wings, I still cringe at snakes with actual fangs......call me crazy!!

Its to much money for me. I think I am going to go back to my original thinking, a Irian Jaya Carpet Python.
