Escaped Snake!

So this morning I get up, as I always do every morning (actually multiple times a day). I see Twinkie my pastel BP made Dookie so I clean it up, lift the hide and he's gone. Now the lid wasn't locked (stupid) and it was slightly open. Eventually I found him hiding under my crestie terrarium

Now I'm super anal about keeping everything secure and locked. So do me a fav people, double check tonight before bed and don't be a dummy like me!

I will say i am super paranoid about making sure all my animals cages are locked before i go to bed, and before i leave for work each day. I check them 2-3 times before i leave the house. Had to have some of the tops of the enclosures remade to put the locks in as well.

I'm disappointed that threads like these are posted with such frequency. "Help, my snake escaped!" because people don't lock their cages or forget to put the lid back on. This careless behavior could get your snake killed. Not to mention, it gives the reptile community a bad reputation. What if someone forgets to lock the cage with their burmese in it? My cages won't close unless they're locked. But if you have cage that has a lid that needs to be secured, tape a note to the lid and the cage. "DON'T FORGET TO LOCK!" or something along those lines. Even if you've never had an escaped snake yet, do it anyway. I don't mean to be unkind, but these sorts of threads are popping up almost weekly.

I'm a firm believer in doing your research on your animals and triple checking. I never thought I would be one of "those" people but I am and I wanted to share. I don't want people doing what I did. So check people, triple, quadruple check

Like, you weren't before? I dunno about anyone else, but I hate losing animals. When I lose an animal, it means I lost time spent caring for it, and money spent caring for it, not to mention whatever money I spent buying the animal itself. So you can bet your sweet bippy I make darn sure my animals stay in their cages when I don't want them out.

Don't get me wrong. I was young once, and I'm not perfect. I've had a few escapes happen in my past and I'm not proud of that. Its not a "Oops, I goofed! Tee hee! Hope mom doesn't find out!" One time, it was an expensive investment breeder animal and a few others, it was pure negligence on my part. And a lot of the times, I'm hoping the snake doesn't make it out of the house and freak out a neighbor and cause a scene. (luckily, that never happened, but I get paranoid about that stuff).

I don't care if its a $20 cornsnake or a $1000 mutation. Do what you must to make sure your animals stay in their enclosures.

I'll add that it's not even about the money most times. Whether you have 1 or 100, you are personally responsible for the animal's life and well-being. Lose it, and you lose not only the money, but the animal's life is at risk because of your own careless behavior. It's just not acceptable.

Humans make mistakes. Thankfully this one ended almost as quickly as it happened, so that's good news.

It pays to have a reptile room whenever possible. That way, when we do make mistakes, the animals are at least safely contained within an escape-proof room even though they've gotten out of their enclosure. Of course, if one is keeping small snakes, that's not so easy, but it is possible

I have a reptile room. I wasn't worried about the dog or cat getting in, there is nothing that can fall on them, and the vent is closed and covered.

It is just disheartening. I don't care about price, it's the life I am responsible for that I worry about

i keep all my snakes in a room they cant get out of so if one does get out its not going far lol

As someone who has been mia for awhile I have a really good idea of why these threads keep popping up.

Noobs.

They were at least ten new to the forum threads yesterday. I have also notices several " looking to get a first snake" or "first time snake owner" threads.

There is a member on here( I won't mention Todd's name) who like to rant on his web page. I think he should bring his rants about escape proof rooms and secure cages over here and make a thread about them.
