Hmm...

...Filtration, Nothing. During the winter when I do house the smaller guys indoors I just change the water weekly. The larger and during the summer smaller animals normally live in ponds, which are naturally filterated by The O' Bag her self, Mother Nature.
During the winter I put up Therma Sheds over the ponds. These sheds are double paned that air is collected in between an holds in the warm air and stuff. So I'm told...
To keep the water warm we use Gas water Heaters which we got from Koi Ponds and for the Air temps we use Strip heaters that are 30' on one side of the enclosures.
We also have 200 watt Spot bulbs (which are hung in different lenghts) in random areas for basking.
After all this said, Air temps range about 85F :_ Water 76-78 : basking 90-100
(depending on the spot)
I also use live plants outdoors; What kind? No idea, never was good at Botany.. Anyhow, they are water dwelling plants that I 'borrowed' from golf course ponds. Also some have small trees that are growing at the waters edge. The plants vary from Moss stuff to the long thin grassy things.
(Dont ya love the scientific explanations? heh)
The substrates I use are Bare bottomed(Troughs), River sand, Clay/dirt (ponds).
The river sand is to heavy to be pulled up by the filter (if you use 'em) They each work just as good for the land area as well.
The summer I take down the sheds and lights and heaters and use the good ol' weather we get. Its normally hot here... Just keep the German Law in mind while housing(A rule I like to follow) and the proper temps and feeding and you should have a long lived and happy caiman.
As for feeding, I like to use Rodents, Minnows, Bass ( I head it was illegal to do this if you got them from lakes ) cat fish, guppies ,frogs, Wild pig, Deer (I'm a hunter and I share my bag)
crayfish, And what ever they happen to catch on their own.
Here's a pic of a nile and Spec.
