wild mice for snakes?

Just saw a mouse in the house.. got the trap set. Got me to wondering though, is it okay to feed a wild mouse (dead or alive) to your snake? I know in the wild they eat wild rodents (Mr. Obvious here-LOL). Just wondered if it poses any risks to a pet snake. Thanks for the input.

Anything from the wild is unsafe to feed you don't know what it has been exposed to and you would be passing that on to your snake.

I wouldn't. You never know what parasites it might have or what toxic chemicals it could have gotten in to. Its not worth the $2 you save by not buying one.

Exactly... Wild mice pose the risk of worms, disease or possible poison ingestion.

even if you don't use mouse/rat poisons, your neighbour may, or the previous owner of your home may have left some in the attic, too many variables.

Okay, pretty much figured it wasn't a good idea, but thought it was worth asking. Still on a learning curve trying. Trying gather information BEFORE I get the snake rather than wait til after and find myself doing something dumb! Thanks for the info.

Cannot help but to admire that.......

If more people would enter our hobby like you, a lot less animals would suffer.

the only risk of feeding wild mice caught around where people live is they may have ingested pesticides

for instance, slug pellets for killing garden slugs, pesticides used by farmers to spray crops or chemicals gardeners spray plants and flowers with

pestisides can be harmfull even fatal to your snakes

wild mice from out in the countryside away from gardeners/farmers who may use pesticides and poisins would be ok imo

cheers shaun

Re: wild mice for snakes?

I wouldn't feed the wild mouse. Just for informations sake though, parasites cannot go from mammal to reptile, because they are vulnerable to different parasites. One example would be a flea. Eats up any mammal, can't feed off a snake. However the threat of pesticide or other poisoning is definitely present.
