Hiya, new :)
Hey, I'm Annie! Not quite sure what to say here?
I'm a rat owner and find snakes so beautiful and fascinating, after lots of research I'm deliberating whether to get a cornsnake. But one thing that seems to be stopping me is I'm not sure if snakes are capable of such a bond to their owner...

Snakes cannot bond with us, but the do depend on us for their care.
The way I look at it is it's the best darn one sided relationship that we could have.

Welcome Philline! I've had many of the "bonding" pets (cockatiel, dogs, cats, horse) but I've always loved reptiles. No, they don't develop the same affection for us as would say a dog, but it certainly doesn't lesson my affection for them. But I get enough enjoyment from caring for my snakes, keeping them healthy, watching them grow and I appreciate just the simple fact that they tolerate handling - something that is amazing in itself when you consider their natural instincts. Snakes are some of the most beautiful creatures on Earth, and to even be able to observe them in captivity alone, without handling - It's a privilege to own such amazing creatures IMHO.

As Wayne already put so well, our snakes do not 'bond' with us.
I do believe they can reconize us from others, by sense of smell or taste or whatever.
I deffienetly notice my snakes, expecially Blue, seem more apt to crawl all my arms, but not always other people. I can just shove my arm in their viv while I type on the laptop and they'll silther on up, not sure if anyone else could do that with my snakes.
I've already felt the rat I saved from being dinner last night has bonding with me more than my snakes have, they're just like little dogs, eh?

I have actually noticed a similar thing with my snakes, they seem to be very calm with me, especially my boa, compared to how they are with others - even my husband who handles them just as often as I do. Who knows what makes a snake "prefer" one person over the other? I think we just have to leave that to speculation.

Snakes might not "like" you but they make rewarding pets, especially if you get into breeding.
