I rescued this one tonight.......
When I went down to take a picture of the water pump, I noticed this right next to the sump basin.
A yellow spotted salamander, it was making it's way to the water. If I had not found it, the pump would have sucked it in and shredded it.
As soon as the woods thaw out, I will be releasing it in a location I know of that has a population of yellow spotted salamanders.

Re: I rescued this one tonight.......
I almost thought the kids left a rubber toy down there, Then it moved.
I am wondering what possesed it to walk half a mile from the woods and decide to live in my basement.
I looked up the diet, it has been living off spiders and other bugs it finds.

Re: I rescued this one tonight.......
Since I had to "buy" crickets today anyways, I put one in with the salamander.
I read that insects including crickets are part of the natural diet.
No intentions of keeping it, from what I understand, Salamanders are extremely difficult to try and keep in captivity.
The weather forecast for this weekend is superb for releasing the little one back in the forest where nature intended it to be.

Good thing you came along! I would have felt awful for the little guy to be shredded to bits :c
Hope he enjoys being returned to his home, or maybe even taken to a new home, with fellow amphibious buddies

Gives me a thought, I never showed off my massive habitat, I need to start a thread.

Re: I rescued this one tonight.......
As soon as the creek settles down so I can get on the other side.
second day in a row now I could go outside with no jacket or sweater, just a tee shirt.
