Hello!

My name is Jay. I am an avid fish hobbyist and interested in keeping some new.

I think corn snakes would be my best bet because, they are low maintainence, and I can hide them from my mom easily.

I can get a snake if I get straight As this term and get the snake and supplies without my mom knowing.

Hopefully I can join the rest of you soon in the hobby of herp keeping!

I'm not sure deception is a good way to start off. Mom could one day find out and things may not go well.

Imagine all the things that could go wrong with hiding a snake from your parents...A snake getting out and them finding it would not be a fun situation for instance...:/

Anyway, if you wait, later on you will take pride in how you did the responsible thing and studied the animal you wanted thoroughly before you bought it, not to mention you being able to say, "Yep, I worked for this and now I have it."

Hello Jay, Welcome aboard. A corn would indeed be a good first pet as they are inexpensive and relatively simple to care for. But as Grimleo said, Work for it, you'll appreciate it more!

I've researched Corn Snakes a lot. A few months ago I was going to get one, but it wasn't within my budget. Now I have plenty of start up money to keep a corn. I already have a UTH, heat bulb, lamp, and reptile carpet from a few months ago. I know I still need some more stuff.

honestly i would stick to aspen bedding. i tried the repti carpet and it is alright, just alot more work than aspen. aspen i spot clean when the snake poos, repti carpet you have to take out all the cage furniture and the snake, wash the carpet and disinfect it, then let it dry. aspen or the like (no pine or cedar) is the way to go.

Yup, I am going to get some aspen bedding. More natural and they can burrow in it too.

Would it be ok to buy a rubbermaid for a corn snake? I think it would be a good idea to line the rubbermaid with styrofoam and make some styrofoam ledges for them.

welcome to the forum, i dont see any reason to not use a rubber maid container, i use them for my youngs snakes, and i know a few people here do as well. i like the look of a nice setup cage for when they get older. If your pretty sure your mom wont make you get rid of it when she find it one day, which trust me she will, i was the same way as you when i was young "impacient" with out the straight As< good job bro keep up the good work. but my mother would say no but what she really meant was...LOL actully im not going to lie, im still Far to impacient lol

I have my dad. He likes animals and is completely fine with snakes as long as hygiene and marks are maintained.

ah so its a hide from mom only deal. i personally wouldnt have done it im very afraid and respectful of my mother lol and if you really need a bonding experience with your dad play some ultimate frizbee or something untill everybody in the house says you can cause its kinda disrespectful to your mother especially if she said you could have one but after you prove yourself to really be responsible your parents arent trying to be cruel and not let you have one they are trying to teach you lessons for life. if you do decide to get a serpent just please make sure the fact that you have to hide it doesnt effect the welbeing of the snake
