Toronto snake sighting

Hello,

I saw a snake in Tommy Thompson Park, Toronto, Ontario, Canada last Sunday and was wondering what it might have been. The snake was pretty small, around 35cm (14in) long, black, had a head that seemed a little wider than the body and had no rattler. It was crossing the road as I was biking by. I stopped to get a closer look but it quickly moved into the grasses.

Tommy Thompson Park is a man made peninsula that juts out about 5km into Lake Ontario. The area I saw the snake in had lots of grasses and wildflowers, marshes/wetlands and sparse forests.

I thought the people of this forum might know.

Re: Toronto snake sighting

Most likely a baby garter snake.

When they are very young, their head is a bit bigger than the body.
