Snake climbing sides of tank
Lola (my rosy boa) currently in a 10 gal. typical aquarium, which is fine as she is still only about a foot long. I plan on getting a larger tank for her before long, but this should be good for now and it's the tank that was given to me when I adopted her. She has been stretching up the sides of her tank and the past 2 days I have gone to the tank to find that she has somehow made it all the way up and is perched on the top ledge of the tank between the tank and the lid. I had heavy books stacked on top of the lid but didn't think she was anywhere big enough to climb that high so I didnt bother to buy clips for the lid until today once I saw this happening. Is there a reason she is doing this, or is it a typical snake behavior to be curious and try to escape? Her husbandry has been good, and she has started eating regularly- it's room temperatures, which is usually low to mid 70s, on the cool side and the "hot" is kept in the high 80s with a basking spot around 90. She has 2 hides, one on each side, and a water dish on the cool side.
Thanks,
Amy

Re: Snake climbing sides of tank
Hello and welcome! All snake will try to find away to escape. You would be amazed at what snakes can climb. You should always use lock on cages. For rosy boa you just want a water bowl big enough to get a drink. Like sand boas they don't need alot of humidity.

My brazillian boa used to do that. I was amazed when I found her perched between the cage and the lid. It really is crazy how they get some places.

Re: Snake climbing sides of tank
sometimes when you see this behaviour it may mean that the animal is trying to escape something from within the enclosure. maybe the enclosure lacks in security or is too hot but this is not always the case as snakes commonly look for an escape. double checking husbandry doesnt hurt though and you may find a actual cause for this behaviour and be able to correct it.
for example i have a pair of dumerils that were constantly trying to escape their enclosures and were rubbing their noses bad, looking for a way out. i added extra hides to each enclosure and the problem was solved and they looked good as new after the next shed.
there may be no problem with your enclosure but i thought id through in two cents...

Re: Snake climbing sides of tank
Some of my garter snakes did this so much that I had to get different covers, they were always in the space between the top lip and the screen.

Re: Snake climbing sides of tank
It amazing how they can climb. I had a 2 1/2 foot RTB get out once and found it on top of the door frame. The only way it could have got up there is by climbing up the frame.

Re: Snake climbing sides of tank
The snakes tank with screen cover has the green circle on it, This garter snake escaped and followed the path outlined in red, plopped himself right into the tote with the purple circle, a colony of mice! I found him sitting in there all fat and proud with a full belly!
Thankfully the adult mice did not tear him a new one, there was a few mother mice in there that could have chewed him up good, but they must have been scared enough to leave him alone.
