I'm new too,need some advice or direction please

I just got a bullfrog, his mouth gaps, have not seen him eat, there is goldfish but no action, just put filter in tank...anyone seen a gaping mouth? is it water or vitamin?

I just want to first say that I am not too familiar with amphibians. Usually gaping has to do with being too hot. Could you describe your tank setup? And your feeding schedule and supplementation?

Hi, thanks for your reply, no heater, and he ate 3 crickets but having problems aiming at prey. Also sloughing skin, put fish antibiotic in water and water conditioner too...Any suggestions? thanks

Your bullfrog is shedding, which is normal. After he finishes, he probably will have no problems aiming at his prey, and his appetite will come back.

You might try vivariumforum.com for more info re keeping frogs--there are a lot of experienced frog people there. Good luck!

Huh, I didn't realize frogs shed. I've had my Pacman frog since February and my Red-spotted toad since May and I haven't seen either of them shed. That will be interesting to watch...

Kimberly, I didn't know frogs shed, either, until I read about it on Vivarium Forum. Then I thought, "Oh, of course! They're herps, too!" The reason we don't usually know it is because they often do it at night or at a time when (they think) no predators are around, and they eat their shed (at least, apparently many of them do)! So there's never anything left behind as visible evidence that we would get to see.

Kinda bizarre at first thought, then seems perfectly logical . . . but still a little strange! I know how snakes do it, but I haven't figured out (researched) how frogs do it . . .

Now you mention it, I actually remember seeing my White's Tree Frog shed twice (when I had her). At first I thought she was dying. It looks like gagging, open mouthed, it's awkward. It doesn't look like a 'normal' herp shed..it's gooey!
It looks very bizarre.
