hey, thought i'd join the forum as im trying to find out info on my snake, i have a baby corn snake and wanted to check when hes ready to move onto the next size mice....im sure ill find the info on the forum somewhere, but incase i dont...hes currently on 2 fluffs a week and he would happily eat more if i gave him the choice, whats the next size up? is it hoppers? I think size wise he should be ok for hoppers so should i just try and see if he manages it? What happens if the next size up is too big for him? could it harm him?

Sorry, I have been a little slow approving new members so your post was not visible. If the snake is not able to eat it, it will more then likely kill and leave it once it can not get it down. That said, it will try extremely hard to get it down.

We need more info in order to be able to help you effectively.

How long is your snake and what's his diameter at the widest part of his body? I'm not sure what "fluffs" are size-wise (not a term my supplier uses)--do you know what each one weighs in grams? Do you know how much your snake weighs in grams?

A rough rule of thumb is to feed a prey animal about 1.5 (can go less but not more) times the diameter of your snake's body.

i guess fluffs is an english term for the second size of mice? the snake is 2 and a half ft long and about a cm and a half in diameter. I guess what im asking is, if i try the next size up it wont hurt the snake if he trys and cannot manage it will it?

Kirstyelizabeth, I think your snake will be able to handle the next size up easily--are they called hoppers in England? Some suppliers have 5-6 sizes (e.g., themousefactory.com) and others only three. My supplier says a fuzzy is 5-7 gm, and a hopper is about 10 gm. Your snake should be able to handle 10 gm easily and probably 15 gm weanlings equally well.

Try the next size up. If he can't handle it, he'll either reject it or regurgitate it. But I'm betting he can handle it just fine!

I would go with a small hopper and see how it does. If he gets it down fine then maybe try a bit larger of a hopper until it really holds your snake over for a week.
