Swollen female question

I dont know a whole lot about breeding snakes yet, im learning as much as i can tho. When a snake is 'gravid' it means full of eggs am i right? But what is it when a snake ovulates and swells up, why does it swell and how long does it last?

Thanks for any help

"Gravid" means pregnant. When a snake ovulates (usually lasting anywhere from 12-24 hours, there is a very noticeable mid-body sweeling . This is the fertilized follicles travelling down the ovaducts where they will grow and sit for ~45 days until being laid.
