Looking to get a Red-Eyed Tree Frog...

Hi guys, great forum you have going here.

As the title says, I'm interested in getting two or three Red-Eyed Tree Frog and I've been doing all the research I can and I wanted to setup the aquarium at least a week in advance of buying the frogs.

I'd really appreciate seeing some pics of aquarium setups that you guys have so that I may "borrow" some ideas

Anyway thanks in advance guys, and I'm sure I'll come up with more questions as I go.

Here is my red eye setup that I am looking to sell. It is not the best looking one you will see but the frogs and the crickets thrive in it. It may look a little funny but this picture was taken shortly after it was misted. The plants are pothos, prayer plants, rubber plant (the frogs favorite), and some fern that I cannot remember the name of.

Just a quick question about the frogs themselves, how active are they during the day? I'm aware they're nocturnal but have you ever seen them eat during the day?

I don't keep redeyes, but what I've noticed with nocturnal species of anything that I've kept, is that they are usually active froma bout 5-7pm into the night, and until about 5-6am in the morning.

You might see them the odd time going around in the afternoon too. Where are you going to be getting your red-eyes from? I'd like to get a trio myself.

Super Pet has a price listing for them at $70, though I haven't seen them in the store myself. I plan to give them soon to find out if you have to order them or something. I'm not sure if there are Super Pet's in B.C., I'm in Ontario, but I remember seeing some guy having them for sale somewhere in B.C.

I think that in the last 4-5 months I have only seen 1 of the frogs on the move during the day and that was for maybe a 5 minute period so if you are getting them to watch them move around, don't expect the daytime to be very rewarding. I find the better times to watch them are after 10 at night or before 6 in the morning (I was working a 7am morning shift so that's how I know).

If you are planning on getting some soon I would check with KaHane with GenerAsian Exotics. I do not know if he has been working with them since the fire he had in December but it is worth a try. I know he used to sell them for around $50 a piece (that may have changed now) and they would be coming from a breeder so you can pretty well be sure they are taken care of better than in a pet store. I'm not too concerned about their nocturnal behaviour, since I myself am nocturnal :P

Red-eyes don't move much during the day unless they really have to. The just spend their time stuck to the underside of some leaf, looking like a blob of green bubblegum.

You'll also notice that they return to the same leaf for weeks or months on end, making it look like they haven't moved around at night for ages.

My pictures are nowhere near as good as DragnDrop (I really suck as a photographer and my camera sucks with no optical zoom) but here are a bunch of shots. Some of them are quite old around when I first got the frogs to some more newer shots.

Enjoy them. They are amazing animals and if you ever get to hear them call, it is one freaky sound.

For a Red Eye enclosure is it okay to have a screen top? Im concerned about loosing humidity.

The beauty of tree frogs and leaf frogs is that the daytime humidity can be somewhat lower than you expect, just as long as the nighttime humidity is fairly high.
The frogs live in tree canopies during the day, exposed to drying sun and wind. To keep from drying out, they've developed a waxy type coating. Even though the humidity in the typical tree and leaf frog habitat is higher than what we have indoors, it's still way lower than it would be at ground level. Screen tops are actually a good idea since these frogs need air circulation which imitates the fresh air brough in by the breeze.
Misting heavily early in the morning will keep the daytime humidity up high enough, and a really good spraying down in the evening will raise it for night time activity. I wouldn't hurt to mist again before you go to bed just to make sure it's humid enough overnight.
