It has been awhile.

I haven't been here in a while, but the itch to get another chameleon is brewing. And seeing all the pictures on here is helping that itch. I thought I would have to wait for the Red Deer show, but I see TARAS is having one in April. I hope I can find a veiled there.

I know now the err of my ways. And with a few cage modifications, I should be able to more securely house a chameleon.

After all, what good is an empty cage?

tell me about the err of your ways so that I may learn from them and not make the same mistakes with my young veiled

ydnic - Guess I'd better look more into it. I thought it was in Calgary. Perhaps there is two.

labomb - First a bit on my chameleon experience/tragedy. Had a young male veiled cham (Juno) for a little over a month when I came home to find he had been mauled to death by the cat. Not exactly sure on what happened, but I did learn from it. As per the err of my ways:
  • Improved "door" for the cage. The cage was not exactly finished when I got him, but finished enough. I was wrong on that one.
  • Proper sized mesh for the age. He was able to slip through although he never left the mesh. I considered changing it but he was growing so fast I thought I didn't have to worry (one or two more weeks away from being too big). Wrong again.
  • At the time of his death, the cage was on the floor. Next time I will keep it elevated at all times. Reason being, I moved the cage into the bedroom and away from the cat as I was leaving for the weekend. Came back Monday and all was fine. Tuesday after work is when I found him, before the cage was back in the regular location.
  • I thought the cat had accepted him (or didn't care about him) as she never even acknowledged him. But she only had to "play" with him once.
  • Give the cat valium. Well I am kidding on this one, the cat may seriously have a mental issue (Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome). Not vet diagnosed, but all the symptoms fit.

So that is what I learned. As far as I knew, Juno was happy (usually green) and healthy (ate lots, shed easy, not too moody). Good luck with yours.

wow. well I don't have a cat to worry about. that must have been devastating. "Albert" shows no interest in coming out of his space, I leave the door open sometimes when I am nearby. he only comes close to the opening to watch me. he's pretty cool and alot tamer than I expected he would be from the stories I have heard. I've only had him two weeks, he seems to be doing well. good luck with getting yours.

This is quoted from an email from Walter, "The shows are going to be Aug 27,28 and Nov 19,20 ......." The April show is a Taras show in Calgary at the Ogdon Legion. Hope this helps and I hope you find a new Cham. TB

No worries. Now I just hope there will be a veiled chameleon there for me to bring home. Anyone know of any tables yet?
