naturalistic substrates

i've finally started doing some non-online reading on reptiles and been reading The Art of Keeping Snakes by de Vosjoli and his discussion on Bioactive Substrate System. has anyone tried this and how successful have them been? what exactly have you tried?

not familiar with this term. i would geuss it means using biological means for cleaning, feeding (plants, lizards etc) and along that line?

im doing that with my day geckos, but i still throw in some crickets, worms, and fruit now and then.

Oscar I was also reading that, And what I belive he means is like making your own eco-system, not to sure though. Talks about using soil and having earthworms, or beatles to eat fecial matter and so on, but Im not 100% sure..
