Bit by the Spilotes bug... pic

Actually, I haven't been "bit", he's quite friendly for a Tiger rat!

Anyways, after looking at Ldydrgn's pair and reading many posts of peoples positive experiences with them, I broke down and bought one last weekend. He measures out at 83". I'm amazed at their eyesight, and have never worked with a snake so alert. It has the most piercing stare too. One thing I didn't realize was the mess they can make (and frequently!)

Enjoy!

They are really cool snakes and IMPRESSIVE when they get large. That's a nice one you have! I would love to get some oneday.

Very nice!! Male or female?

Remember they are quite arboreal and like to have lots of height as well as floor space. Have you read any caresheets?

Ldydrgn,

I've read all the caresheets I could find, including the one on your site. One thing I noticed is a wide range of daytime temp recommendations. Some say 78 to 85, while you recommend higher. I've got it 78 deg at one end and 90 at the other.

Right now I've got him housed in a 55 gal, but am looking at a 115 gallon (48"x18'x31"). There are some sturdy branches in there now, but he spends most of his time in the hide as he adjusts.

Also, I didn't have it sexed, but will at some point.

What kind of substrate is that? Looks like sand...if so, you should definitely switch to something else. Either newspaper or cypress mulch would be the best for this species. Good luck with your new snake, they're definitely a cool snake to work with!

Actually it's ESU Desert Blend Litter, not sand. I don't feed my snakes in their tanks anyway that use this substrate, although it's harmless if ingested. Because of the mess he makes, I will be switching to aspen after the first cleaning.
