Custom Built Boa Enclosure

My husband and I built this box for our new boa._ She's @ 3 months old, 24" long._ The box is 4' x 2' x 2', made from Oak plywood with brass hardware and an acrylic door panel._ All hardware and wood from Home Depot._ Inside we have two Desert Rays radiant heat panels on the top and a Dragon's Lair Heat Mat taped to the bottom._ Heating panels from Big Apple Herp. We sealed it with about 5 coats of satin finish Polycrylic, water based acrylic sealant. Also the stain is a water based stain. In the one photo of the snake, I am using newspaper, but I just switched to "Jungle Mix" substrate today from a local pet store.

That cage looks HUGE for a snake that small! You may want to look into smaller housing until the snake is a bit larger...

The cage itself looks great!

I did the same thing with some of my snakes when I built my first enclosures, which were WAY TOO LARGE for the snakes at the time! I wound up using rubbermaids inside of the actual enclosure.

IF you decide to keep him in there, try to set up a bunch of cover and hides for him to feel secure!

Beautiful cage and I am sure the boa will love it in say 1 year or later. Its a bit large for the little boa. Something like cheap rubbermaids will work fine for 6 months to 1 year depending on size upgrades. That cage is nice but will stress out the little boa.

Go smaller and graduate up in months to 1 year. It won' t hurt and will be better over the long run to the boa' s health.

There is nothing wrong with the cage but large space for the little one can stress it out for now.

That encloser looks great.. But its a lil big for such a small snake..

U might want it to look more of a natural enviroment and not just a polished wood box, read up on there natural home , add more wood, try to fill it in a lil more, the snake will feel more secure..

PS.. THEY LOVE TO HIDE in high places, nice large tree branch under the basking light.. or in a hidden hut....

What does it have now to help break its shed?
