Problem with recent hatchling.

I had another set of babies hatching yesterday. The first one out of the egg yesterday morning was still in the same position last night. I figured it had died. I was wrong, but I think there is something wrong with it. It is still connected to the egg by its umbellical cord, but what is wierd, is there is a pink blob of some sort in the egg. It also can not open its eyes, and it has a bit of a kink to its tail. Does this sound like an underdeveloped baby that most likely will not make it, or does this sometimes happen? I soaked him in water this morning, and he drank a fair bit, and does try and run a bit, but is a bit smaller, and is always dragging the egg behind.

What do you guys think?

I've had a couple hatch out like that. I just left them alone and they started eating after about a week. Though they were a little smaller than the other hatchlings they still turned out alright.

It is a bearded dragon hatchling. That is why it is in the Pagona forum

. The pink mass in the egg looked to me like it was some sort of innard that for some reason developed on the outside instead of the inside. As I said he is still connected to it, which is something I haven't seen before. Anyone else have anythign to add? I will try and take pics tonight. He also has a little bit of a kinked tail.

that pink think is similar to a human plasenta (sp?) All eggs(reptile, chicken or other) have an umbilical cord like you mentioned that is attached to the inside of the egg. Same thing happened to one of my viper gecko hatchlings. isolate the little guy for now if you can and put on moist papertowel to induce the first shed. I'm not sure how long it takes for beardies to shed, my vipers only took a day, but see if you can break away as much of the egg shell and wait for it to fall off.

it should be alright.

Well, first off... i have no experience hatching out a beardie. I do however, have plenty of experience with YSAH's. Yup, made it up myself. Stands for Yolk Sac Attached Hatchling..... I aim to get it into the vet textbooks!

Anywho, that's a typical presentation on a fattie or a leo.... the "umbilical cord" has remained attached to the yolk sac. The beardie may be "early" or, a problem with the development may have occurred. No matter, what's done is done, and nothing is to be gained by dragging that dang egg around after you.... sterilize a pair of scissors and snip that umbilical cord as close to the beardie as you are comfortable....the little "stump" will dry up and fall off of its own accord. It will not bleed. The egg and its contents are finished... how to nurse a preemie/impaired beardie i can't help you with, i'll leave that to the more experienced owners....
