Spilotes (Tiger rat) *pics* Woo!
Picked up this great guy from SCALES this morning. I'm so terribly excited about him. Vanan and I have really wanted spilotes, but haven't been able to get our hands on one. We'd been eyeing the ones Ryan and Sheila had, and finally they let one go. The "ugly" "mean" one. Hehehe.
Well he is here now!! He's quite black for a spilotes. The front half as you can see doesn't have that much yellow and his back half is TOTALLY black, janseni like. I'd like to find a dark black female like him and breed towards totally black spilotes, but aah pipe dreams!
Here he is! Black Beauty,

He's supposed to be mean, but he's not too bad. A bit flare-y, but I am able to handle him without too much aggression. He's not a cornsnake though!

Coooooolll!!! I want one too!
Even if he's "ugly and mean", he still looks great. Congrats!

He's not that mean, I picked him up with my hand for bagging. He's fine when picked up deliberately, just don't second guess the situation. Funny how snakes can tell if they've got you flinchy.
I'd have loved to keep him "but there's a new guy in town". I can't wait to see what he turns out like, we have been told he will get a lot of orange as he ages, in between the yellow bands.

Hello!
Nice "high-black" Spilotes. What does the belly look like?
Is it pure yellow or does it have black blotches?
My Spilotes are also more on the black side. Their bellies are pure yellow the first half and black the other. Makes them look a bit like Pseudohaje :-)
Have much fun with it, Spilotes are great.
greets,
gurkee

Hi Katt,
Congrats on your new addition.
I saw one at a show a few years back which was almost totally black, except for the yellow facial markings and a single, thin yellow stripe right down the back! I should have bought it, but I passed because it looked wild-caught to me.
Gurkee; Funny you mention
Pseudohaje
...I was commenting to a friend the other day how they remind me of
Spilotes
!
Cheers!

Very nice Katt! Does he puff up a bit and open mouth hiss at you?
