bad rep, no wonder!!

I was watching this program on Tv tonight, on the national geographic channel. First off the segment was called natures nightmares and was all about cotten mouths. So right away i was like, c'mon! lol. So they were showing how people have expanded our living area's and now we are invading into their territory.

So get a load of this guy! He bought a house, surrounded by around 2 river systems that are filled with cottenmouths. So you see him saying how he is only trying to protect his family from them. How he does it? By going around his backyard with a freakin shotgun!! You see him just un-loading like 20 shots into the water killing a bunch of cottenmouths. Idiots too, his wife is like we'd move but we really love the area. Well clearly they dont love it if all day they're out shooting cottenmouths...these people make me laugh! And then the guy is talking about how they are invading HIS territory, yet they've been their for what, two weeks..and the cottenmouths, like a million years!! Some people just dont make sense

You guys know people like this?

Unfortunately, I see that type often enough. I get calls for "snake nests in my garage" or the like. Or people who just kill any snake or lizaed they see.

Im sad to say my father is like this, not to a viscious extreme, but in his brain, if a snake is in your yard, you kill it. He wouldnt do it in a cruel way, thank goodness, but he doesnt seem to have much empathy towards them, either. He just told me he killed one the other day. I dont know what it was, he said it was the weirdest looking snake he had ever seen (and growing up in the country we have seen a lot, at least those native to SE USA) He said it was black with rings around it, and it jumped at him, so naturally, he killed it. Makes me sad, but I cant change the man. I do wonder what it was he killed.

But for all the anti-snake people out there, there are people like the people on these boards, helping to keep the balance.

That, at least, is something to smile about. I do wish there were more legitimately educational programs about snakes on, though.

Human stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

I'm lucky my parents weren't like that even with grass snakes or anything. If we were around they would actually point them out to us so we could see. We had a frog or toad that lived near the foundation of the house and we would see it once in a while, they even named it kermit!

The most my dad ever did was set up a humane trap to catch the mole that was eating through our garden. Unfortunately, the only thing he was able to catch were the neighbor's cats! LOL

I work with a bunch of unenlightened people like that. One guy in particular will run and get a shovel if he sees a snake, yet will leave leftovers outside for the foxes. I've offered to relocate the snakes for him but his answer was "I ain't touchin em unless it's with the edge of a shovel." Sigh.

Agreed, my parents would also point it out. After i brought all the herps into the house, my dad started to really get a liking for them...my mom just doesnt mind them as much anymore lol. I was up at my cottage and a snake ran right by my foot, just a garter, and my dad was like catch it! That was a while back so i didnt know if it was poisenous or not lol, so i didnt go for it, but he didnt want to kill it...im happy they arnt like that!

Alot of people dont really understand much about them. They just go by what societys "rep" of snakes are. That all they do is slither around, they are vicious and you will die if you get bit. So when people find out you have them as pets, they get a bad impression. But i have noticed that once they realize what they really are about and after listening to you debate on the subject,(i know first hand hehe) they get use to them and figure out that they wont bother you much unless you look, act or smell like food. Not everyone has a passion for it i guess.

HEHE!!!! My mom is terrified of snakes but she would never ever ever hurt one. The one day I came outside onto the back deck and I could hear her saying "shooo snake shooo, go away, i need the lawn mower" I looked over the edge of the deck and there was my mom telling this garter snake that was curled up on the ramp to the shed to shoo and waving her arms. The funniest thing is that, eventually, it did listen to her. HAHA. Just thought I would share that story.............I thought it was kinda cute.

whenever my friends seem scared of my snakes I remind them that their dogs and cats have much larger mouths and teeth than my snakes have
