i suggest you dont put any paint at all, unless your painting to it protect the wood from the rain. If so im not sure which would be the best sorry, try to find a one thats none toxic ha ha

I don't think it matters man....they'll all do good for the wood, but I dont' think you need to worry much about wood rotting anyways, so I'd just go with some genereic black exterior latex

yea thanks meow_mix i guesse
where is this information coming from un treatedwood kept under constant humidity will not rot? I strongly disagree, as I was rushed to build my cage and it wasnt treated properly now it is rotting hence why I am building a new one.
Do you yourself use generic eterior latex paint without harming your chamleons? What I am asking is are you 120% sure it will not harm my animals?

I know, if you let the paint fully dry and cure it's not going to hurt your animals...I only suggested exterior paint for resistance to moisture

how is it already rotting? does moisture sit on the wood for extended periods of time? i finished the inside of my chameleon cabinet with a few coats of an enamel spray paint which i let cure for about a week before the fellow moved in. a seal (stain or no stain, though a nice dark stain makes that crappy pine a lot of us use look MUCH better) would probably be more ideal. after all, that's what folks spread on their decks which have snow sitting on them all winter and rain falling on them occasionaly through the rest of the year. providing ample curing time is essential, so as with all other things chameleon, don't rush it.

enamel spay paint eh sounds intersting, is that just clear?. I know for stains and things like that it would probably be better to use a water based stain just to be on the safe side.

I've used water based varathane - it's clear - but you need to apply several coats, sanding in between. I have had a lot of luck with it.
