Heating pads & Rubbermaids
Stupid question. I bought a couple heating pads today, and had a question. If I'm not taking the backing off and sticking it to the rubbermaid, what part of the heating pad faces up? The side with the sticky backing?
Told you it was a stupid question!

doesnt matter
I usually just tape them down to the table or whatever they are sitting on. Then sit the rubbermaids on them.

i would say put the sticky side on the rubbermaid, that's the way it is supposed to be if you were to peel it, but i don't know forsure if the other side puts off heat at all, you could plug it in and test it and see what temps you get from the non-sticky side

I'm finding that the sunbeam pad I bought (no auto shutoff) fluctuates between 88 and 101 degrees on the low setting.
This is somewhat disconcerting. Has anyone else had this kind of fluctuation with the sunbeam pads?

i have the same pad as you cruciform and mine will stay at 88-90 on the low setting at all times, has never fluctuated on my to that extent, i normally check it in the morning before i leave, when i get home and before i got to bed and those are the temps i have been getting

The 12x12 one maintains the same temps for me consistently, but the 12x24 is the one that fluctuates.
Oh well, since I pulled something in my back the other day, I guess I can use the wonky one on myself 
It's too bad the 12x24 one isn't consistent because it would be great for heating two containers per rack level.
Once we move into the house I'm going to look the feasability of designing a water pipe system to provide heat.

i have the 12 x 12 one, was going to be getting the 12 x 24 one for the new cage i am building, but might reconsider now, thanks for the heads up
