Common and Alligator Snappers

Hello everyone!

From what i understand, both common and alligator snapping turtles are ilegal to own in Alberta? Thanks.

Yes, they are both restricted.

The following is a list of the turtles you can not keep without a permit in Alberta.

1. SNAPPING TURTLES (Family Chelydridae)
Snapping Turtle Chelydra serpentina
Alligator Snapping Turtle Macroclemys temmincki

2. FRESHWATER TURTLES (Family Emydidae)
Blanding's Turtle Emydoidea blandingii
European Pond Turtle Emys orbicularis
Map Turtles Genus Graptemys

3. MUD TURTLES (Family Kinosternidae)
Mud Turtles Genus Kinosternon

4. SOFT-SHELLED TURTLES (Family Trionychidae)
Soft-shelled Turtles Genus Trionyx

! LOL. I was just making sure.

You can own those with a permit? I know your in saskatchewan but would you have any idea where i could get one? I would hopefully like to get a common snapper. Do you know how much they eat and how much space they need? Thanks.

By that i mean a permit not the turtle itself!

Auskan, thanks for your kind words but I just snagged that info from the controlled list I have saved. I guess I should have mentioned where it came from, certainly not from my head.

Chris. I am not aware of any new permits that have been granted to Albertans to keep species on the restricted list. From what I've heard, they usually just say no - but if you would like to inquire yourself, just talk to one of your local Conservation Officer - they can give you some information or help you find someone who has what you are looking for.
