Talking F/T shelf life

what is the average shelf life of f/t rats?

i might order 40 rats from rodent pro, and that would last our snakes about 4-5 months, am i buying too far in advance?

they should be fine. I'ld split them up into 3 groups and double ziplock 2 of them for later use. mine seem to get freezer burned after a few months but my snakes dont mind

I actually was wondering about the same thing. I can get a good price on feeders but have order in lots. Nice to lay out a reasonable price for a supply that will last for a couple of months.

I'll usually buy about 600 every 6-8 months depending on winter or summer order, still have a few fuzzies left from august's order that will feed june babies, 10 months lol funny but thats about as long as I have ever had any last. I suspect that as long as the vacumm seal lasts and the temps are steady there isn't much problem.

The length of time that rodents last in the freezer depend totally on whether they are vacuum sealed or not. A properly vacuum sealed bag of rodents will last for approximately 2 years in the freezer as long as the seal isn't broken <ie. the bag is opened or whatever>.
If you have your rodents in a ziploc bag, it will drastically reduce the time the rodents will be "good". On average, a rodent in a ziploc bag might last at most about 4-6 months, depending on how often the bag is opened and such.
If you have to order in large lots, then I would highly recommend getting yourself a vacuum sealer and repack all the rodents into smaller bags, if they aren't in small bags already. A good quality vacuum sealer usually goes for about $100 or so.
Take care
