pinky question

i was wondering if anyone knew what should the size of my tokay gecko be to start occasionally feed him a pinky mouse? and should i feed him live or dead pinkys? im thinking start him off on a live pinky so he knows what they are and then feed him dead ones when he starts to recognize them.

hes about 7-8 inches right now. just estimating because he wont really stay still when i try to measure him.
