40gal low hmmm what should go inside?
A wonderful friend of mine has given me a 40 gal low reptile tank and now i have the hard decision of what should go inside. I was thinking of going with a uro. I've always liked them but was wondering what everyone else thought. Deffinatly going to go with a lizard of some sort prefferably long lived and not too nasty as i have 2 kiddies 4&7. So throw your suggestions out there as to what you think would make a great pet .

Armor tail agamas or helmeted geckos would be awesome. I'd go 1.2 or even 1.3. Definately go something desert or arid.

the measurements of the tank are 36"x18"x15" (lxwxh) right? If so a small group of leopards would be good.

hmmm. with those measurements, I would go for the leo's. The kids will love em(have 2 myself, kids that is LOL 3 and 7). You could have a group of 3 or 4 They would be the best "pet" lizard.
Aside from pets, agama's, anoles, certain skinks would be good in that size of tank too.

Housing many leopard geckos together isn't a good idea.
The uro is also much more active than a leopard gecko.
We have many leopard geckos and 2 uro's but I still wouln't house them all together. You get one that gets sick, all the others get it. Same as snakes.

I would rather not go the leo route just yet, Love the lil guys but I am looking for something more along the lines of a uro, or something similar to that. Don't want to have a tonne of crickets in the house all the time..lol i hate the little things
i'm not exactly sure what the measurments are i'm hoping to pick up the tank tonight get it out of my friends hallway..lol..i know it's 3ftx?x? i'm looking for something that is an arid type of species but is also relatively safe for me to take to presentations at the kids school and daycares. thank everyone

ya i've been thinking of a BTS i really like them, so i figure it's a toss up between a BTS or a uro. Hmmm man it's such a hard decisioncan anyone direct me to some great care sheets on BTS's i would appericate it very much. I have tonnes of info on uro's and have been reading up on them for 2yrs now. The kids just would like something that they can handle as well. They love all our snakes and i figure we ready for something that requires a little more care, but not something really high maintence as i'm starting back to school in a couple weeks

blue tongues and uro's are great lizards for kids. however, i think maintenance of the blue tongue might be easier. not as hot, more variety in foods. mine eats monkey biscuits, high quality canned low fat cat food, cooked plain chicken, frozen mixed veggies, blueberries, bananas, peaches, and occassionally nightcrawlers or superworms. but u by no means have to give them live food. if u are looking for a kid friendly lizard that is low maintenace, i would definetely go with the blue tongue. they are great! altho not as active as the uro.

Thanks everyone for all your help. and thank you mark for those sites very helpful hmm perhaps we'll just have to get another large tank and get one of each...lol... it's sooo hard to decide does anyone know how available BTS are in the Ottawa region i've only ever seen one at a crappy pet store and he didn't look too good, and what would be the average price i would be looking at for a bts thanks everyone for all your help

i don't know about where to get a bts in your area. there are a few breeders here in the states. what about a reptile show? anyway, here bts usually run anywhere from 75.00 to 125.00 u.s. dollars. i don't know the conversion....sorry. good luck!

I don't know about in ur area but I usually see bts for around 125-200 depending on the species. probably the most common species u will find will be the irian jayan bluetongue (T.s. chimaerea), which is the species i own. bts are becoming more popular lately so u should be able to find them available in ur area. good luck.
