anybody collect fossils?

Just wondering how many of you collect fossils? Dino bone, petrified wood, even animal skulls and bones. We have been lucky to find an abundance of these in our area, and were wondering if there are others out there who share this hobby as well.

I've always had a passion for fossils. I have a few unidentified bones I've found when the ground had eroded, probably a horse or cow haha. But I've always wanted to go hunting for fossils, I want to discover a new species or find a nice big mammoth tusk I can mount somewhere, now that would be cool. Did you hear about the recent discoveries up in the Yukon? I think it was the Yukon. These 10,000 year old glaciers had begun to melt and they found tons of spears and carcases and bags and stuff used by the ancient Native Americans. It was cool because everything was so in tact because it was frozen in the glacier. They had this one spear that still had caribou hairs stuck to it. They gave it a date of ~10,000 years. I wonder what kinds of reptiles were around 10,000 years ago.

Yes, I do. I have collected minerals and fossils since I was a kid. My dad used to go fishing in Manatoulin Isl. every year and he would find me the best fossils on the beaches there. I actually put some of them in my herps display cases. I am a goldsmith by trade. I have studied goldsmithing and gemmology. Most of my collection consists of cut stones but I do have some crystals. I have purchased most of them though. I love everything about that stuff. When I travel, I am always on the lookout!

We live in an area rich with fossils and remains of Native American teepee villages. We have found bison skulls and teeth in the riverbeds, and our friend has found teeth and claws of a dinosaur - tyrannosaur, I think, not T rex - as well as vertebrae and other bone.

We also heard about the find in the Yukon, we have a piece of Mammoth ivory from up there.

We also live close to the place where they have been finding fossilized snapping turtles, and up north there is Big Bert, a prehistoric crocodile found in the Carrot river.

We will be trying to organize a trip to Dinosaur park in Alberta next summer, as a field trip for HISS members. Let us know if you would be interested.

I have a few that I found as a kid. I have a great example of a Spirifer that I found in the Pocono mountains when I was a kid. Fossils always interested me, as did rocks and minerals.

Here in New Mexico it would be hard not to, there are so many sites to visit. Rocks and minerals are big around here as well. This is my owl, I found it as is at a site about 70 miles(113 km) south of Albuquerque

this piece is about twice the size of a softball and was collected about 14 miles(22.5km) west of Albuquerque and is known to collectors as Rio Puerco petrified wood

HEHE i have a piece of petrified elephant poo on my tv. LOL My friend lives on Grants Farm and his father is the curator for the elephants. So he gave me a present of elephant poo!!! That's the closest for me. Oh wait i do have a skull that was given to me by a friend cause he thought it would look good in the beardies tank. I have it put away but i don't know what the skull is from.

Those are nice specimens, I like petrified wood, and we seem to be able to find different kinds of it here, just small pieces tho. There are arrowheads to be found if you look, but we are not allowed to collect them or sell them, so why waste time looking?

Lately we have been bone collectors, finding skulls along the sand bars. Some of them wash up every year in the spring melt. Most of them are damaged, but nice flower bed decorations anyways. We also collect antlers, as there are plenty of white-tail and mule deer here.

I collect animal bones/skulls. I have a two turtle shells, a deer skull (complete with rack!), a steer skull, and a rat skull.

I'd love to start collecting fossils...I do have a prehistoric shark's tooth necklace from Scales Zoo, so, it's a good start.

I posted these before. Here's a fern and its imprint completely encased. Don't often see the actual "plant", usually just the imprint.

Me and my Dad collect arrowheads we find around here in Oklahoma.. Not exactly fossils but cool all the same..
