Cool find Mark! Looks like he could be a melastic right? Cos dun't they develop the black? Or are they black as babies?

Well, Vanan, I've seen both. I'm hoping this guy stays dark gray. Although the black ones can be pretty too. A hugely variable snake. Anytime someone tells me they have a "gray" one-- I'm off to check it out (in hopes of it being a simus) but this little guy is cool as can be.

its not melanistic. just dark. melanistics are Solid black Like this one.

CrimsonKing... You anger me! How do you find all of these different types of snakes? I see racers fairly often and Ring Necks almost daily, but I wanna see a rat snake here and there. And that hog nose is awesome! If I'm really really lucky, I will find an indigo, but you find everything!
Where do you look for things like this?

Jeff, I didn't find this one. Someone said he had a "gray" hognose that he found in his yard, and a friend went to check it out. It turned out to be this really gray eastern hognose. Hopefully we'll run across more southerns this way. You should be in the right place to find many herps. Plus all the rain lately helps.
