Proper use of temperature gun in ball python enclosure

I am currently setting up the enclosure for my first ball python. I am using a plastic bin with a heating pad and thermostat for temp control. I also bought a temp gun to help to keep the correct temps. Should I be taking temp reading on top of the substrate or should I push the substrate aside and take readings from the base of the tub? I had tried both and will get pretty significant temp readings (i.e 88 F on top of the substrate and 92 F when I push it aside).

Hi, here's what I've learned from the forum (I'm pretty new to snakes):

It is a good idea to check the temp on the bottom to ensure it's not too hot for the snake. I don't know if BPs burrow or not. I think in general you measure the top of the substrate to ensure a proper temperature range but you regulate the temperature based on the bottom temperature close to the base.

Anyway, just my advice from what I've seen on the forum. Maybe someone else with more experience will chime in.

You want to check the actual surface temp. Your BP will burrow, push substrate aside, etc... and come in direct contact with the surface.

Good job getting your setup ready and dialed in before bringing your new snake home. This will save you and your new pet a lot of stress.
