Some new additions

Went to repticon today and may have gotten a little carried away.

Rainbow boa. This was one of the ones I was hoping to find. Youngster and only a little feisty.

Mexican black king. My 8yo daughter's selection. She saved her Christmas money for this little beauty.

Florida king. Low cost snake here but I really like them. Found one with some good orange.

Re: Some new additions

I'm a bit jealous. Wish I had the space for these guys myself. Enjoy!

Re: Some new additions

Thanks. The only thing I regretted not getting was the red tail green rat snake. I just couldn't keep buying snakes and he was too grown for any enclosures I had ready to go. Plus I feel like I need a mister or something to keep up with their humidity. Regardless, I didn't think it would be responsible to bring him home. I will own one one day though. I think they are beautiful.

Luckily we have a large bonus room that gives us the freedom to keep these guys. Everyone is in appropriate sized tubs or tanks right now but I am in the process of building a stack of 4x2x18 enclosures and another stack with a 6x2x2 base for our Red tail and an arboreal enclosure for our eventual gtp.

We are going back tomorrow to grab some supplies and an enclosure for the little crestie we also picked up.

Re: Some new additions

From what I've read the red-tailed green rats are all WC, imported infested with parasites that may or may not have been properly treated, and generally don't live long lives in captivity. Personally, I prefer the prasina for a green rat snake.

Re: Some new additions

Congratulations on your additions! They are all beautiful snakes and a pleasure to keep. I added two BRBs to my collection last year and really like them. Fairly low key snakes that are great eaters and get prettier after each shed. WHile I've never kept Mexican Black Kings, I've heard nothing buy wonderful things about them. Enjoy and keep us posted on their progress.

Re: Some new additions

I have them all settled into their tubs where they will live for probably the next month or two while I construct the enclosures for our bigger creatures. We got the tank set up for the tiny crestie today too.

Re: Some new additions

this tank needs more climbing and exploring stuff for Squirt but he/she seems to like it so far.

Re: Some new additions

So we were going to wait a week to feed all the new guys but everybody has been comfortable in their hides for a bit, a couple of them were acting hungry and the sellers said they were feeding on saturdays, and we were feeding the rest of the gang so we gave it a shot. They were all being fed live so we are sticking with live until I determine that they are all good eaters before considering a switch.

The Florida went after its pinky right way. Fast first strike that glanced off of the pinky but she followed with another solid strike that held well. It took her a bit to coil but she got it wrap tight.

The MBK just did a lot of tongue flicks and stared at the pinky. gave her a minute then moved on.

The BRB couldnt be bothered. The pinky was wiggling all around and even took some steps and my little BRB was like "whatever".

So we left them to it for a bit. The pinks were pretty immobile and not right on top of the snakes so I wasnt too concerned over any safety issues. Checked back about 5 minutes later and I had 3 little snakes with 3 little lumps in their bellies. Success! Our other 3 snakes have always been healthy, quick eaters so I was nervous we were a little spoiled and these might give us some trouble but not this time. Hopefully the behavior holds up.

Now the crestie...she is so small I cant tell if it is eating or not. I looked for poop but again...she is so small. I offered food for about 30 hours and removed it this morning. I will put mroe down tomorrow evening and hope for the best.

The week long wait is useful to an extent. I've usually waited a few days or until whenever my feeding day is.

the seller said to be sure they were comfortable. It had been 3 days, they looked comfortable enough to me, and one was showing prey seeking behavior so I figured it was worth a shot.

Re: Some new additions

You can also try offering a repashy superfood water mixture through a syringe, and just letting the gecko lick it up. I don't know what your feeding your crestie, but many keepers find much success with this product. After your gecko gets a taste for the food, you can then put it in a water bottle cap in the enclosure. Insects can be offered for variety, but are not essential with the complete diet.

I am using the repashy. I was going to try the "dab on the nose" trick. Will do the syringe if I have to. We did both of these for an ailing leopard a while back with success. Didn't think about it to get the cresties appetite going. Thanks for the tip.
