It's the fertilization of the eggs I believe. I don't really know this part.

You know because the snake usually looks like it's swallowed a football.

Ovulation is the movement of follicles from the ovaries into the oviducts so they (follicles) can be fertilized by the sperm cells. It's evidenced by a very large protuberant swelling in the lower third of the females body.

Yup. Furthermpre, an ovulation can be completely unseen or missed by a breeder. They vary in both size and duration.
