Burmese vs Retic

What do you think would be better for your first big snake, i know individual snakes will vary but what is your consensus of the average of them both.

One (Burmese) you def cannot cross state lines with. The other (Retic) you *might* not be able to cross state lines with. Both are hardy animals. Both can get very large. I've had both and the Burm seemed a little more chill. Having said that, I have 3 dwarf retics now.

Last I heard you could not cross state lines with a retic. There is, however, an allowance for people who were members of USARK and also sent in a note saying they had reasonable suspicion they would need to ship a listed animal (they donated money before a certain date - I think sometime last August) to allow them to ship across state lines. But no one can put one in their car and legally cross state lines.

I say go with whichever one you prefer, that way if you can only support one giant you got the one you want, and each has their own drawbacks.

Some of that is incorrect. All the usark members from before the cutoff date can move Retics and the 3 recently listed green anacondas across state lines by any means until the final descision on the lawsuit. Just can't ship into Florida or Texas. But members in Florida and Texas can ship to out of state.

Ah. Must have misunderstood then. Either way, unless OP was a member by that date, they won't be able to move with the snake themselves.

If going across state lines is not in your future and you are simply curious about the better of the two I say reticulated. Full disclosure I've never actually owned a Burmese and never will and both my retics are less than 3 & 1/2 feet long but based on what I've observed in each animal retics seem much more interesting to handle and the morphs (although played out in balls) make the retics seem even more interesting still. I've seen few Burmese that are must look at snakes. Plus if you ever decide to breed the animal you get back to the whole problem above

I do plan on breeding sometime in the future, but i thought the law would be a plus in breeding burms. If i were to breed i wouldn't producing anything crazy enough to compete with other big breeders, but theirs hardly any burms available in California.

If you do plan on breeding even in the future, make sure you you have a market to sell the babies. The market for burms is very small in N.Ireland and it's one of the reasons I don't breed mine

you might *really* think about why this is the case. cali is big, but the market for burms may not be, esp w the interstate ban.
