My hoggie is getting aggressive..

Hey everyone, recently, my hoggie has become more aggressive.. as in when I'm handling her, she is nice and calm, crawling around my hands, then out of no where she tries to bite me/bites me.. and its not because my hands smell like food, I make sure to wash my hands very well/handle her before I eat so i don't have any food scents on my hands.. Any ideas?

Mine is the same way when coming out of the enclosure. she hisses and strikes quite funny actually. Ive been tap trainning her same as retic owners do( just funny doing it for something so tiny). Ill take her out with the hook once out she calms right down.

Nope, she is well fed... She will just slowly crawl around my hand and then just bam, she'd bite me...

Re: My hoggie is getting aggressive..

i have a question why use a hook your hands work better as far as handling i dont do it i have beed hogs kings and about 55 different snakes have not foud one yet that likes to picked up its unnatural . i only use hooks or tongs when i cleaning my mojave cage she has never tried to bite but why take the chance she feeds well and is healthy so there no need to stress her out

Re: My hoggie is getting aggressive..

Tap trainning is when you use a hook to gently touch the snake to make it aware of your presence with something other than your hand as it dosent give off a scent or heat signature. once the snake is "awake" and aware of my presence I gently lift her with the hook and as soon as shes out I can put her in my hand with no more hissing or striking.

Re: My hoggie is getting aggressive..

do you touch the food that she's eating? Maybe your scent is getting on them. Doesnt sound like aggressiveness to me.. more like she just thought you were food? Pour mouthwash on her when she does that and she'll probably figure out thats not a yummy thing to bite into.

WHAT?!?! mine acts this way when its nowhere near feeding day. Why would you ever pour mouthwash over any snake???
Plus I never touch feeders with my hands anyways. they go from freezer to warm water then out of the water to the snakes with hemostats.

Re: My hoggie is getting aggressive..

I make sure I don't have food scent on my hand.. I wash my hands and I have my sister put the pinkies in a bowl of warm water and i use hemostats to take them out of the water and feed her.. How much should a 46.4 gram female hoggie be fed? I feed her 1-2 times a week with 2 pinkies at each feeding with each pinky weighing in a 1.5 grams each.. making it a total of 3 grams each feeding...

Well, you probably can increase up to 4gms total per feeding and that is the low end of a 46gm reptile. Bc 10% of 46 =4 and actually is 4.6 closer to 5gms of food. So the female can use a bit more per feeding. If you wanted to go with 15% of 46 is 6.9gms very close to 7gms. You really have to give her bigger pinks or go to f/t hopper mice.

Re: My hoggie is getting aggressive..

I would agree that you can certainly up the food size to large fuzzies or small hoppers depending on how your rodent breeder catorgizes them.

Re: My hoggie is getting aggressive..

In my experience so far, as limited as it may be...seems that all of my hogs have gone through a cranky 'teen' stage. That may just be the issue with yours. Leave her alone for a few weeks other than feeding, water, and cleaning and see if that helps.

I picked up a suuuuper agressive female as a rescue. She would strike the glass if I so much as entered the room. I put her through an intense handling 'program' then would leave her alone for a week. Took 2 months, but she's a doll for now. Then...2 of my others began doing the same thing lol.

Silly snakes XD

Re: My hoggie is getting aggressive..

What technique is best to use on removing a snake that is biting your finger/hand? Will spraying water at it work well?
