Hognose salivates when eating?

I recently fed my hognose a reptilink for the first time (sausage for snakes) and while she was eating it I noticed some salaiva/ mucus(?) and after she finished swallowing a small strand of it came out. I haven't noticed any changes in behavior (shes quite active) and haven't heard any poping, sneezing or strange hissing noises. The sausage mightve been a bit bigger than food she's used to though. Do snakes salivate this much when they eat?

Might be the venom. They are technically a venomous snake so it may just be excess venom since there's no fur to soak it up like if it were a mouse or something.

I don't know exactly what the Reptilink sausages are made from, but I guess it could be juice/fat residual from the sausage rather than saliva from your snake. Just a thought...

Re: Hognose salivates when eating?

I don't really have any experience with hognose snakes, but, my indigo, another non-constrictor, drools like crazy when he eats. Maybe it's extra lube to help the snakes that don't constrict swallow still struggling prey? It's probably a lot more obvious on the sausage than it would be on a furry rodent.

As others said I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a part of eating. Like us, we salivate when good food is near!
