Another Snake ID

ht tp://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j178/skhpldk/snake.jpg
My dad found this little guy. He's about five inches long and from Indiana.

Anybody know what it is and what I should feed it?

Re: Another Snake ID

It is a Brown Snake, Storeria dekayi. I don't recall exactly which subspecies is found in Indiana, probably Northern? Don't feed it anything, let it go.

If you're going to keep it, check your state laws first. I kept and bred these little guys for a while as a kid. They stay around the 15-20" range and feed on terrestrial mollusks, small lizards, frogs, and salamanders.

Re: Another Snake ID

Thanks for the help.
I'll keep him at least for the winter. I can dig up some slugs and worms to feed him before it gets too cold. He's way too small for frogs and such.

Re: Another Snake ID

You can chop up night crawlers to if you have a bait store nearby. Don't feed red wrigglers as they're toxic.
