Possible Injection Infection?

My most beloved Retic, Sonny, has just been given the clear from our vet to be taken off Baytril injections, after enduring a month of them to cure his rhespiratory infection.
Now, three of (what I assume) the injection sites are red and irritated, one especially capturing my concern. The first two have turned the yellow scales around the area almost completely white and raised his skin, while the third and most tender one has turned red and somewhat scabby.
I cannot add images as I'm on my iPhone, but if you have access to instagram, my account name is s_c_a_l_e_s, and you can see the images there.
The most irritated area is soft, and when I applied pressure to it, the raised bump flattened out. Do you think it would need to be drained?

I don't suppose the vet bothered to tell you to do half of one single injection in one site and the rest in another did he? Bleaching of the scales is unfortunately not as well documented as it should be. The white isn't a concern the red may be. It sounds like an irritation from the injection. Monitor it closely.

Re: Possible Injection Infection?

Seen this before, it's a reaction to the Baytril. Keep a very close eye on it, this happened when a vet gave my first snake, a Ball Python, a Baytril injection. He passed away shortly after, though I can't say for sure it was the Baytril.
Either way, I really don't believe that stuff ought to be given to reptiles. It's designed for dogs and cats, not snakes. Still, vets tend to just give it to any animal regardless of species, especially when they don't really know what to do.

Re: Possible Injection Infection?

Baytril is just a general antibiotic, as long as it's dosed right it shouldn't be a problem. I think Fortaz/Amikacin are better options though.

Re: Possible Injection Infection?

imo it's better to have the vet do a tracheal wash, or at least take swabs and do cultures to identify the exact type of infection.to find out the best treatment for said infection

baytril is merely a broad range antibiotic

cheers shaun
