Uromastyx

Brought some animals to the white plains show and managed to sell them so I decided to buy myself a pet that I will have no intention of breeding or pairing. Was between an argentine black and white tegu and a uromastyx. Decided on a uro as I'm not ready for any very large lizards and can't gaurantee I will be able to house an adult. Was hoping for a cbb ornate male, but I went with this little guy instead. I inspected a ton of them, this one had a decent tail thickness and no missing toes, nails, no scars, etc. Hes just not the brightest at the moment. I will wait till he sheds to make a full judgement of his color. Very fast / feisty in the cage, but when I take him out he is inquisitive and looks around, frequently making eye contact. Really fun little guy. I was hoping to find some nice garters but I did not, so I will have to wait on those. I just have to fatten him up now!

Re: Uromastyx

Nice, I've been wanting a uro for awhile now. Just haven't come across one that caught my eyes.

With the number of Reptiles that fluctuate through my house, I made myself a commitment to only purchase an animal I love.

Seen some nice ones, but none that I want to commit to yet.

So far, what's your experience with them? Temperament, feed response, etc...

Thanks guys. They definitely have a different personality than the monitors I'm used to. I would say they are very monitor like when in the cage, maybe a bit bolder like an iguana. However when I pick him up, its a different story. Very 'tame', not squirmy at all, kinda just hangs out and looks around. If I didn't know better I would say he enjoys it. As soon as I drop him back in the cage though, he bolts for a burrow that hes dug. Not skittish though, can sit and watch him with no issues.

Re: Uromastyx

That's why i always like these guys they are so mellow when handling. Plus they are super smart. I have seen a couple that were trained to use a litter box.

That is cool. Now I know for sure I definitely want one, after reading all these comments.

Re: Uromastyx

I had a pair of these guys once: U. geryi (Saharan Uros). Very cool, and they actually bred a few times on accident, but I never was able to hatch the eggs.

Nice! I've heard uro eggs in general are not easy to hatch. No plans to breed anything other than knobtails so I only grabbed this one little guy. Hes gotten very flighty / skittish, only if I put my hand in the cage to take him out. Once I get a hold of him hes still fine. Funny how much they remind me of varanids.

Re: Uromastyx

Few more pics from today with the new iphone5s camera. Still on the thin side, we are working on it. Seems to be acclimating very well though and has a decent system of burrows hes working on.
