leopard gecko. no uv needed, doesn't require a lot of space, easy diet to keep up with, pretty chill and docile.

Leopard geckos are awesome but ackie monitors are just as if not cooler, there an easy hardy little monitor with lots of character, they don't get real big but building an enclosure is going to cost more for an ackie

For most beginners I think it would be hard to beat leopard geckos. Small cages, easy to feed, simple husbandry.

Bearded dragons. Big enough and willing enough to tolerate plenty of handling. Very interactive.
Children aside- I do not necessarily believe in the "beginner pet."

Bearded Dragon. Easy set up, interactive lizard, and simple to feed. The average household has what they need, minus the crickets/worms/dubias. Plus there fun little guys.

The only thing with beardies is the larger caging, uv, and huge amounts of bugs the juvies eat. (Those bugs also turn into huge amounts of poop.)

I've kept a variety of lizards over the years. Off the top of my head, the only ones that are popular that I haven't are Leopard geckos, angles, or monitors(any). So I have no experience with leos. I've heard there easy, but with what I have worked with, beardies are the easiest. My current lives in a 20 gallon long, so not a huge tank.

Leopard Gecko for an ADULT beginner. Small kids with no knowledge of pet care can't handle small lizards in my opinion.

Blue tongue skink docile, curious and diet isn't too difficult. Also doesn't run too quickly.

Crested Gecko.
I've had a Beardie and a African Fat Tail Gecko in the past, and believe me, the Crestie is cheaper and easier to care for. All you need is some Repashy CGD and you're good to go! No crickets, special lighting, and depending on your house temperature, no special heating required either!
I would rate the Crestie at #1 for ease.
